• 1909 - Explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson reach the North Pole.
• 1917 - The United States declares war on Germany.
• 1973 - American League of Major League Baseball begins using the designated hitter.
• 1983 - Interior Secretary James Watt bans the Beach Boys from the 4th of July celebration on the Washington Mall, saying rock 'n' roll bands attract the "wrong element."
• 2004 - The University of Connecticut became the first school to win the NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball titles in the same season.
