"Augustus Saint-Gaudens: Master of American Sculpture" Documentary in Wolfeboro May 14th

Filmmaker Paul Sanderson to Discuss His Documentary About the Renowned Sculptor and Coin Designer

(DURHAM, May 5, 2008) – The life and works of one of America’s greatest sculptors and most famous coin designer is the subject of the documentary Augustus Saint-Gaudens: Master of American Sculpture, which will be shown Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wright Museum of WWII History in Wolfeboro, NH. The screening will be followed by a discussion with award-winning filmmaker Paul Sanderson. The New Hampshire Public Television event is open to the public and free of charge; an RSVP is requested, as seating is limited.A display of Saint-Gaudens’ coins will be available for viewing, courtesy of Littleton Coin Co., and well-known numismatists Q. David Bowers and David Sundman will discuss the coins. Also present will be Dr. Henry Duffy, curator of the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site and one of the leading scholars on Saint-Gaudens. Although millions see Saint-Gaudens’ exquisitely carved cameos and heroic-size public monuments in museums and public places, few know the man behind the art. He influenced American cultural life through his sculpture and as a teacher and supporter of the arts. In 1905, Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to redesign the American coinage. The documentary covers Saint-Gaudens’ life from his birth in Ireland in 1848 though his rise in the art world. Saint-Gaudens’ home, studios and gardens are a national historic site in Cornish, NH (www.nps.gov/saga). The site features over 100 of his artworks, from heroic public monuments to expressive portrait reliefs, and the gold coins which changed the look of American coinage.Support for this screening was generously provided by author David Bowers, David Sundman of Littleton Coin Co. and chair of the NHPTV Board of Governors, the Wright Museum, Whitman Publishing LLC, The Black Bear Micro Roastery, and the Wolfeboro Area Chamber of Commerce.
