  • 1920 - The Volstead Act goes into effect and prohibition begins in the United States.
  • 1950 - Thieves steal more than $2 million from the Brink's armored car company's offices in Boston. in what became known as the Brink's Robbery.
  • 1991 - Operation Desert Storm begins when aircraft strike targets in Iraq.
  • 1994 - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes Southern California, killing at least 61 people and causing $20 billion worth of damage
