AMERICAN REVOLUTION HISTORY ON THIS DATE
1775 – USS Alfred becomes the first vessel to fly the Continental Union Flag (precursor to the "Stars and Stripes"). The flag was hoisted by John Paul Jones, who lived in Portsmouth, NH, while his ship, America, was being built.

- 1967 - At Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, a transplant team headed by Christiaan Barnard carries out the first heart transplant on a human.

- 1979 - Eleven people are killed when fans rush for the doors at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum before a rock concert by the Who.
- 1984 - More than 4,000 people die after a gas escapes from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India.
