AMERICAN REVOLUTION HISTORY ON THIS DATE

1729 – New Hampshire representative at the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Josiah Bartlett, was born on this date in 1729.

1697 - St Paul's Cathedral is consecrated in London.
1763 - Dedication of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, the first synagogue in the colonial states.
1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte crowns himself Emperor of the French at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
1823 - In what is now known as the Monroe Doctrine, President James Monroe, in a State of the Union message, states that America will be neutral in future European conflicts and will not tolerate European interference in American affairs.
1859 - Abolitionist leader John Brown is hanged for his October 16 raid on Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
1942 - As part of the Manhattan Project, a team led by Enrico Fermi initiates the first artificial self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction.
1954 - The U.S. Senate votes 65 to 22 to censure Joseph McCarthy for "conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute".
1961 - In a radio speech, Fidel Castro declares that Cuba is going to adopt Communism.
1988 - Benazir Bhutto is sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan and becomes the first woman to head the government of an Islamic state.
