1783 - The last British troops leave New York.
1947 - Movie studio executives blacklist the Hollywood 10 after they refuse to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee.
1950 - The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950 hits 22 American states, killing 353 people. Wind speeds at Concord, NH, were recorded at 110 mph and 160 mph on Mount Washington.
1963 - President John F. Kennedy is buried at Arlington National Cemetery
1984 - 36 musicians record Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia.
1999 - A 5-year-old Cuban boy, Elian Gonzalez, is rescued by fishermen while floating in an inner tube off the Florida coast.
