• 1534 - The English Parliament passes the first Act of Supremacy, making King Henry VIII head of the Anglican Church.
• 1868 - John Willis Menard (R-Louisiana) becomes the first African American elected to the United States Congress.
• 1868 - Republican Ulysses S. Grant defeats Democrat Horatio Seymour in the presidential election.
• 1908 - Republican William Howard Taft defeats Democrat William Jennings Bryan in the presidential election.
• 1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt is re-elected in a landslide over  Alfred M. ''Alf'' Landon.
• 1957 - The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2 with Laika the dog,  the first animal to enter orbit.
• 1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson defeats Republican Barry Goldwater in the presidential election.
• 1979 - Five members of the Communist Workers Party are killed and seven are wounded by a group of Klansmen and neo-Nazis during a "Death to the Klan" rally in Greensboro, North Carolina.
• 1992 - Democrat Bill Clinton defeats President George H.W. Bush in the presidential election.
• 1992 - Illinois Democrat Carol Moseley-Braun becomes the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
