- 1787 - Mozart's opera Don Giovanni is performed for the first time in Prague.
- 1901 - Serial killer nurse Jane Toppan "Jolly Jane" is arrested in Amherst, Massachusetts for murdering the Davis family of Boston with an overdose of morphine.
- 1929 - The New York Stock Exchange crashes in what became known as Black Tuesday.
- 1940 - The U.S. begins its first peacetime military draft.
- 1956 - Israel invaded Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
- 1969 - The first-ever computer-to-computer link is established on ARPANET, which is the precursor to the Internet.
