• 1797 - The Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched in Boston Harbor.
• 1805 -  A British fleet under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson defeats a French and Spanish fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson dies in the battle.
• 1940 - Ernest Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls is published
