• 1789 -  John Jay is sworn in as the first Chief Justice of the United States.

• 1781 - British General Cornwallis surrenders to George Washington and Comte de Rochambeau at Yorktown, effectively ending the Revolutionary War.
• 1953 - Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is published.
• 1960 - Bobby Orr makes his NHL regular-season debut for the Boston Bruins.
• 1960 - The U.S. places an embargo on exports to Cuba.
• 1975 -  A Chorus Line premieres on Broadway.
• 1983 - US Senate votes to establish a federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. by a vote of 78–22. (In 1999, New Hampshire became the last state to name a holiday after King.)
• 1987 -  Dow Jones Industrial Average falls by 508 points, a 22%, drop in what is known as Black Monday.
