1775 - The British defeat the Americans in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
1885 - The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor.
1930 - President Herbert Hoover signs the protectionist Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act into law.
1932 - Around 1,000 World War I veterans, known as the Bonus Army, gather at the U.S. Capital as the Senate considers a bill that would give them benefits. The bill was defeated by a vote of 62-18.
1944 - Iceland declares independence from Denmark.
1963 - The Supreme Court rules 8–1 in Abington School District v. Schempp against requiring the reciting of Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in public schools.
1972 - Five burglars are arrested for breaking into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel.
1987 - The dusky seaside sparrow, native to southern Florida, becomes extinct.
1994 - O.J. Simpson is arrested for the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. following a slow-speed chase.
2015 - Nine people are killed at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina in a racially motivated shooting.
