1703 - Tsar Peter the Great founds the city of Saint Petersburg.
1896 - The F4-strength St. Louis–East St. Louis tornado hits St. Louis, Missouri, and East St. Louis, Illinois, killing at least 255 people.
1930 - The 1,046 feet Chrysler Building in New York City opens, at the time it was the tallest building in the world.
1933 - Walt Disney releases the cartoon Three Little Pigs, with its hit song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"
1937 - The Golden Gate Bridge opens.
1941 - The German battleship Bismarck is sunk by the British navy in the North Atlantic killing 2,100.
