  • 1821 -  Napoleon dies in exile on the island of Saint Helena.
  • 1904 - Boston American pitcher Cy Young throws the first perfect game in the modern era of baseball.
  • 1925 - John T. Scopes is arrested in Tennessee for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution.
  • 1961 - Derry, NH native,  Alan Shepard becomes the first American to travel into outer space.
  • 1973 -  Secretariat wins the 1973 Kentucky Derby in 1:59 2/5, a record that still stands.
