  • 1803 - The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million.
  • 1812 - Louisiana becomes the 18th  state.
  • 1859 - "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens is published
  • 1900 - Hawaii becomes a territory of the United States
  • 1938 - The animated cartoon short Porky's Hare Hunt featuring Happy Rabbit, an early version of Bugs Bunny, premieres in movie theaters.
  • 1945 - Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide.
