  • 1861 - Confederate forces fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, beginning the Civil war.
  • 1934 - The strongest surface wind gust in the world, 231 mph, is measured on the summit of Mount Washington. The record is now a 253 mph wind gust recorded on Barrow Island, Australia during Tropical Cyclone Olivia on April 10, 1996.
  • 1945 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies in office.
  • 1961 - Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human to travel into outer space.
  • 1981 - The first launch of a Space Shuttle (Columbia) takes place
