  • 1788 - The Philadelphia Convention sets the date for the first U.S. presidential election and names New York City as the temporary capital. 
  • 1948 - Maine's Margaret Chase Smith is elected to the U.S. Senate and becomes the first woman to serve in both the House and the Senate.
  • 1971 - State police and National Guardsmen storm Attica Prison in New York to stop rioting. $3 individuals are killed.
  • 1989 - Desmond Tutu. leads the largest anti-apartheid march ever held in South Africa.
  • 1993 -  Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat sign the Oslo Accords at the White House granting Palestine limited autonomy.
  • 2018 - The Merrimack Valley gas explosions kill one person, injures 25, and destroys 40 homes in Massachusetts.
