- 1859 - The first successful U.S. oil well is drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania.
- 1881 - The Georgia Hurricane makes landfall near Savannah, killing an estimated 700 people.
- 1883 - Krakatoa erupts leading to tidal waves that killed 36,000 on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
- 1893 - The Sea Islands Hurricane lands near Savannah, Georgia, killing between 1,000–2,000 people.
- 1962 - NASA launches Mariner 2 space probe on a mission to Venus.
- 2008 - Senator Barack Obama is nominated for president at the Democratic National Convention.
