Plymouth Regional High Bobcats Defeat Bishop Guertin Cardinals

Granite State Challenge - Round One

Do you know the name of the poet who was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize 31 times and who won it in 1924, 1931, 1937 and 1943? The players for Bishop Guertin and Plymouth Regional High were stumped by that one in their Round One GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE game.

Both teams came out of the gate strong, and at the end of Round One Plymouth led by a score of 130-100. Plymouth played a great Round Two, ending the round with a score of 350-260.

In the 60-second round, Bishop Guertin picked the category "Adams, No Eves" and correctly identified seven individuals with Adam or Adams as a first or last name, adding 70 points to their score. The team missed on questions about Jane Addams, Ansel Adams, and Wednesday Addams. Plymouth picked the category "Ever Eddy" and correctly named eight out of ten famous Eds, Eddies, or Edwards, missing only cartoonist Edward Gorey and the 1960s sitcom, Mister Ed, and at the end of the round Plymouth had a lead of 430-330.

In the last round of the game where correct answers are worth 20 points, but an incorrect answer can cost a team 20 points, Plymouth held on to their lead, and won the game by a score of 630-490.

Playing for the Bishop Guertin Cardinals were sophomore Nathan Brodeur, sophomore Amelia Ballingall, and senior Mary Duffy. The team's captain is junior Jack Groeneveld-Mejier, and the alternate was Geoffrey Zhang.The team was coached by Kathryn Gann.

The Plymouth Regional High Bobcats were represented by captain junior Rhys Harris, junior Michael Cathy, junior Erek Bickford, and junior Rhianna Herlihy. The alternates were Ben Kresge and Mason Earick. The team was coached by Jay Fogarty and Troy Harris.

The Plymouth Bobcats move on the Quarterfinals where they will face Exeter High on Saturday, April 13 @ 6 pm on NHPBS.

The next Round One game airing Saturday, March 16 @ 6 pm on NHPBS features the Academy of Science and Design and Nashua High South.

Oh, that poet, it was Robert Frost, who also taught at Plymouth State College!

Granite State Challenge features New Hampshire's top high school academic quiz teams as they demonstrate remarkable teamwork, quick thinking and smarts to beat the clock and buzz in first on this iconic New Hampshire game show. The game emphasizes quick recall of math, science, social studies, language arts, and fine arts facts—along with questions about current events, entertainment, sports and New Hampshire.
