SALEM defeats WINNISQUAM to take 2002 "GRANITE STATE CHALLENGE"

DURHAM, May 29, 2002 - The Salem High School Blue Devils defeated the Winnisquam Regional High Schools Bears by a score of 570-505 on May 22 to become state champions on the season-ending edition of New Hampshire Public Television's academic quiz show, Granite State Challenge. The season began in October, with 32 New Hampshire high school teams competing. Four rounds narrowed the field to the final two teams, Salem and Winnisquam. Salem High School was represented by Seniors Andrew Pascoe, Jonathan Foley and Mark Robinton; Juniors Ian Fredenburg and Katie Locke; and Freshman Stanley Steer, coached by John Sytek. The runner up, Winnisquam Regional High School of Tilton, was represented by Seniors Luke Nyman and Brian LaPierre; Junior Erin Ellingsen; and Sophmores Franklin Rea, Abby Deleault and Logan Phillips, coached by Neal Byles.Granite State Challenge is a televised quiz competition showcasing New Hampshire high school academic teams. The competition emphasizes quick recall of factual material in all major disciplines - math, science, social studies, language arts and fine arts - along with questions about current events, movies and TV, sports, and New Hampshire people, places and events. Granite State Challenge is underwritten by The New Hampshire State Lottery, New Hampshire Community Technical College, Irving Oil, and Public Service of New Hampshire.
