NHPTV SIGNAL FOR NORTH COUNTRY INTERRUPTED DUE TO FIRE ON MT. WASHINGTON

DURHAM, February 24, 2003) - A fire in the telecommunications building atop Mount Washington on February 9 affected many communications systems housed there, including those of New Hampshire Public Television. The station had microwave equipment that fed its signal to the Stewartstown translator (Channel 18).Due to the fire, a number of viewers in the northern part of New Hampshire currently are unable to receive the NHPTV signal. The engineering crew at New Hampshire Public Television is working to restore the signal as quickly as possible. However, rebuilding the communications facility at this time of the year is slow and dangerous work.NHPTV estimates it will take two to four weeks to replace the equipment and build a temporary system. A permanent equipment installation is expected to be completed this summer.Beyond its award-winning local and national television programs, NHPTV provides instructional services for 220,000 students from kindergarten through high school; offers Ready To Learn programs for children, preschool to age 12; and provides professional development programs and advanced technology training for parents, educators and child-care providers in New Hampshire and neighboring states.
