HANOVER DEFEATS WINNACUNNET FOR GSC TITLE

(DURHAM, May 22. 2003) During last night's 20th anniversary edition of NHPTV's Granite State SuperChallenge, Hanover High School defeated Winnacunnet Regional High School. After seven rounds of intense competition, Hanover claimed the coveted title of SuperChallenge state champions by a score of 665-550. The teams kept the score close throughout most of the rounds, until Hanover scored a perfect 60-second round, earning 110 points and gaining a sizable lead over Winnacunnet.The season began in September, with 32 New Hampshire high school teams competing. Four rounds narrowed the field to the final two teams. Hanover was represented by senior Andy Lee, juniors Niall Prendergast and Evan Gardner, and sophomore Harker Rhodes, and coached by William Murphy. Competing for Winnacunnet were seniors Allison McManus, Kathryn Schoenberger, Jeremy Shaw, and Stephen Healey, and coached by Kevin Fleming and Andrew Gushee.This is the second SuperChallenge title for the Hanover Marauders; the school earned its first title in 1991. This was the first championship appearance for the Winnacunnet Warriors.Granite State Challenge is a televised quiz competition showcasing New Hampshire high school academic teams.
