NHPTV Announces Local Winners of Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest

(DURHAM, June 9, 2003) What do bagpipe-playing hedgehogs, turkeys dressed as cowboys, and babies with superhuman powers have in common? They are among the subjects of award-winning stories submitted to New Hampshire Public Television for the ninth annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.The national contest is sponsored by Reading Rainbow, the public television series that encourages children to explore the world of books, provides students in kindergarten through third grade the opportunity to write, illustrate and submit their own stories. The winner of this year's Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Series, Reading Rainbow airs on NHPTV weekdays at 11:30 a.m.More than 500 stories were submitted to New Hampshire Public Television by children in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont. The stories were judged locally and the winners in each of the four categories (kindergarten through third grade) are submitted to the national contest, which will be held in June.
