Winners of 2017 NHPTV Kids Writers Contest Announced

700 Students in K – 5 Submitted Stories

(DURHAM, June 22, 2017) – A sandman-building crab, an optimistic otter and a meditating frog were all featured in stories written by kids in grades K-5 submitted to the 2016 NHPTV KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. 700 creative entries were received from children across New Hampshire and beyond.

The NHPTV KIDS WRITERS CONTEST encourages children to explore the power of creativity by writing and illustrating their own stories. It promotes reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This is the 23rd year NHPTV has hosted a story-writing contest; more than 12,200 children have participated over the years. An awards ceremony for the contest winners will be held on June 24 at the NHPTV Broadcast Center in Durham .

“New Hampshire Public Television is proud to again offer the NHPTV KIDS Writers Contest. The contest underscores our commitment to learning,” said Susan Adams, NHPTV’s Educational Services Manager. “The process of creative writing has been proven to help develop academic skills and improve a child’s self-confidence, creativity and imagination.”

The NHPTV KIDS WRITERS CONTEST is part of NHPTV's commitment to promoting a love of reading, writing, and creative expression in children. The contest aligns with New Hampshire state writing and reading standards, and is made possible with support from Heinemann and the Parenting NH magazine.
