IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ATTICUS PREMIERES 3/15

(DURHAM, March 9, 2017) Our relationships with dogs can be deep and often life affirming and life changing.  Author and hiker Tom Ryan has had three memorable canine companions over the years - Atticus M. Finch a miniature schnauzer with whom he climbed all of New Hampshire's 4,000 footers, several times over.  Then there was Will, an elderly deaf and partially blind dog Tom and Atticus took in and turned around.  His latest companion is Samwise, a puppy who still doesn’t quite know what his limitations are.

Tom wrote about his adventures with Atticus, who died in 2016, in his New York Times bestseller Following Atticus. His latest book, Will's Red Coat, chronicles how he rescued Will from a kill shelter to help him live again.

In a special edition of WINDOWS TO THE WILD, In The Footsteps of Atticus, host Willem Lange joins Tom and his new companion, Samwise on a hike around Thorne Pond in Bartlett, New Hampshire. They share some memories about lives well-lived. WINDOWS TO THE WILD, In The Footsteps of Atticus airs Wednesday, March 15 at 7:30pm on New Hampshire Public Television.

Watch the 12th season of WINDOWS TO THE WILD as Will hikes, paddles and explores New England’s wild places each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.; additional airings and online, anytime at https://nhpbs.org/schedule/series.aspx?progName=Windows+to+the+Wild http://video.nhptv.org/program/windows-wild
