KIDS INVITED TO ENTER NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST

(DURHAM, January 21, 2015) – Poetic tales, animal tales, tall tales, family tales, funny tales, magic tales, nature tales – any kind of illustrated tale can be entered in the NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST sponsored by New Hampshire Public Television! This year marks the 21st NHPTV writing and illustrating contest for children, and with it a goal of 1,000 submissions from Granite State kids and schools. Children in grades K – 3 are invited to submit their original illustrated stories to the NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST. The contest encourages children to explore the power of creativity by writing and illustrating their own stories, and it promotes reading skills through active learning. Contest guidelines and writing resources are available at nhptv.org/kidswrite; the deadline to submit stories is March 31st.NHPTV partners with schools, public libraries and other literacy organizations to implement the contest. A panel of local judges will select first, second and third place winners in April; all the winning stories will be posted on NHPTV’s website and will be recognized at an awards ceremony in the spring. The NHPTV first-place winners are entered into the national PBS contest – and last year, a third-grader from Dover won first place! The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST is part of NHPTV's commitment to promoting literacy and a love of reading, writing, and creative expression in children. It aligns with New Hampshire writing and reading standards. Participating schools have an opportunity to win a special Arthur prize package, including a library of Arthur books, and a special appearance from PBS KIDS’s own Arthur character. The NHPTV-PBS KIDS WRITERS CONTEST started as the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest in 1994 and became the NHPTV-PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest in 2010. More than 11,000 students have participated in the contest since 1994, and eight local children have been recognized for their work with national awards. The contest is made possible with support from Heinemann, Fidelity Investments, and Lincoln Financial.
