NHPTV Production Earns Emmy for Outstanding Environmental Program
(DURHAM, May 26, 2010) – A journey that began in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and ended in the jungles of Ecuador has resulted in an Emmy for New Hampshire Public Television’s JOURNEY OF THE BROAD-WINGED HAWK. The documentary recently received a Boston/New England Emmy award for outstanding environmental program.Broad-winged hawks migrate 4,500 miles from New Hampshire – over an Appalachian flyway in Pennsylvania, over Corpus Christi, Texas – to their wintering grounds in the rainforests of Ecuador and the Maquipucuna Reserve. New Hampshire Public Television followed the migration of the raptor and discovered the powerful connections people and communities have with these hawks.“The original intent of the program was to track the migration of the broad-winged hawk, which can be an impressive sight when thousands of them swirl like a funnel cloud along the migration route,” explained producer Phil Vaughn. “But what we discovered was that people have a powerful connection with this bird, following and celebrating the hawk along its journey, and that became the story.”Early last year, Vaughn and NHPTV videographer Steve Giordani traveled to Ecuador to film the southern habitats of the broad-winged hawk. They visited an indigenous community near Otavola and documented educational work being conducted about raptors, wildlife conservation and protection of the local environment. They also spent time in the rainforest at Maquipucuna Reserve filming native and migratory birds.
