“Making $ense New England” Airing May 20 @ 8 p.m.

(DURHAM, May 14, 2010) – Staying close to home for vacation, teaching kids to save money, avoiding investment fraud, job hunting strategies, and easy backyard gardening are featured on Making $ense New England, airing Thursday, May 20 at 8 p.m. on New Hampshire Public Television, Maine Public Broadcasting Network and Vermont Public Television.Staycations. Staying home for your vacation this summer? You don’t have to travel far to have a great time around here, with beaches, mountains, lakes, water parks, zoos, and historic museums just a short car ride away. Explore what our region has to offer instead of leaving town.Teaching Kids to Save. Today’s teens are faced with financial options that their parents couldn’t have imagined at their age. NH Jump$tart Coalition helps teens understand how money works and how to make smart personal financial decisions. Taylor Morin, a Windham, NH, high school student, talks about working hard, saving money and what that means for his future.Avoiding Investment Fraud. As long as there are investors in search of a good return there will be investment scammers trying to defraud them. Fortunately, there are also regulatory investigators working behind the scenes to protect financial assets from criminal activity. MPBN’s Bridget Barry Caswell talks to one about the latest scams and ways to protect against them.Job Hunting Strategies. Gene Goldstein’s job as a marketing executive disappeared in July 2009. In addition to looking for a job, Goldstein mentors business managers and executives. Providing this free mentoring service keeps Goldstein connected with former clients and offers him the long-term benefits of possible employment.Dig it! Gardening on the Cheap. Until recently, the backyard vegetable patch was mainly a labor of love and relaxation. Making $ense New England, a 10-part series, airs monthly through August 2010, with stories about grassroots responses and solutions to the economic crisis of northern New England.
