New Hampshire PBS to Launch NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) in Colebrook Area This September

NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) is the future of free, over-the-air broadcast television.

Durham, NH (August 4, 2025) – New Hampshire PBS (NHPBS) is excited to announce the rollout of NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0)—the future of free, over-the-air television—in the Colebrook, New Hampshire area beginning the first week of September 2025, weather permitting. Cable and satellite viewers are not affected by this transition.

NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) is a free, over-the-air (OTA) service that merges traditional broadcast television with broadcast internet capabilities, delivering a more powerful, versatile and interactive viewing experience to homes across the region.

Already available in other local markets—including Portland, Maine and Boston, Massachusetts—NEXTGEN TV brings sharper picture, immersive sound, and a more robust signal to your living room. All viewers need is a NEXTGEN-compatible TV or converter box and an HD antenna.

“This is an exciting step forward in broadcast innovation for our region,” said Peter Frid, President and CEO of NHPBS. “NEXTGEN TV not only improves the quality and reach of our signal—it lays the foundation for a wide range of future enhancements that will serve our communities in entirely new ways.”

Laying the Groundwork for a Smarter, Safer New Hampshire

This launch is just the beginning. The Colebrook upgrade is the first step in a multi-phase effort to bring next-generation public broadcasting to all of New Hampshire. While the initial rollout brings improved audio/video quality and signal reception, additional NEXTGEN TV capabilities will be developed and deployed over time.

NHPBS is building the technological foundation now to support enhanced future services, including:

  • Datacasting of real-time emergency response information to first responders—even in areas without radio or cellular coverage
  • Localized alerts and warnings, targeted by ZIP code
  • Opt-in support for local and state emergency networks to participate in the NHPBS ATSC 3.0 datacasting stream
  • Disaster and weather alerts featuring real-time maps, evacuation routes, and critical instructions

This transition will eventually allow NHPBS to provide a transformational new service platform that benefits residents, public safety agencies, healthcare systems, businesses and emergency responders across the Granite State.

What Viewers Can Expect Now

In the Colebrook area, OTA viewers will experience:

  • Stunning 4K video and enhanced audio
  • More consistent reception, especially in rural and mountainous areas
  • Stronger signal penetration into buildings
  • Better accessibility features
  • More precise and timely emergency alerts

What You Need to Know

  • Over-the-air viewers in the Colebrook area will need a NEXTGEN TV-compatible television or converter box and an antenna to continue receiving the NHPBS signal after the first week of September, weather permitting
  • Cable and satellite viewers are not affected by this transition
  • A channel rescan will be required for Colebrook OTA viewers to pick up the new NEXTGEN TV signal

Looking Ahead: The Future of NEXTGEN TV in New Hampshire

This Colebrook deployment marks the beginning of a broader plan to bring NEXTGEN TV across New Hampshire. Over the next few years, NHPBS will:

  • Request FCC approval to expand NEXTGEN TV to all transmitter sites
  • Upgrade additional transmission infrastructure
  • Launch statewide emergency alerting and data services
  • Partner with agencies and innovators to deliver interactive, internet-enabled content
  • Ensure that NEXTGEN TV remains a community-focused, future-ready service
