• 1787 - The U.S. Constitution is signed in Philadelphia.
• 1849 - Abolitionist Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery.
• 1862 -  General George B. McClellan stops the northward push of General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army in the Battle of Antietam in Maryland. Over 23,000 are killed, wounded, or captured, making it the bloodiest day in U.S. military history.
• 1928 - The Okeechobee hurricane strikes southeastern Florida, killing more than 2,500 people.
• 1954 -  Lord of the Flies by William Golding is published.
• 1976 - NASA unveils the Space Shuttle Enterprise.
• 1978 - The Camp David Accords are signed by Israel and Egypt.
• 1983 - Vanessa Williams becomes the first Black Miss America.
