 There are 14 species in this family. They are found in temperate and tropical waters in the
Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. They have flat, round bodies and short tails with caudal fins. They can have one, two, or no dorsal fins. They have a special organ on either side of their head that produces a very strong electrical current that they use to stun their prey. Unlike other stingrays, they use their tails and not their pectoral fins to move through the water.
