Tody

Todidae - todies

There are five species in this family. They are small birds, a little bit larger than hummingbirds. They are found in the Caribbean and they live in the forest and open woodlands. They have long, flat, pointed bills with bristles at the base and short tails. They are green on their upperparts and have red chests. They eat insects and small reptiles. They perch on branches and wait for insects to fly by and then chase after them and catch them in the air. They nest in burrows in the ground.
