Talpidae - desmans, moles

star nosed moleThere are 42 species in this family. They are found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Most species live underground. Moles have long, cylindrical bodies, tiny eyes and their front legs have strong scoop-shaped claws that are turned sideways to help them tunnel into the earth! Moles eat grubs, worms, and other invertebrates. Some species also eat plant parts. Moles have poor eyesight and rely on their sense of smell and touch. There are two species of desmans. Desmans are found in Europe and Asian. They have webbed paws and can swim! They eat fish and aquatic invertebrates.
