Sciuridae - squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, prairie dogs

ChipmunkThere are around 280 species in this family. They are found in all parts of the world, except Australia and Antarctica. They are found in a variety of habitats. Some species live in trees and others live in burrows under the ground. Most species eat nuts and seeds. Some species may also eat fungi, insects, eggs, and small vertebrate animals. There are three basic types of squirrels. Flying squirrels live in trees. They have a membrane that runs from their front legs to their rear legs that they use to glide from branch to branch. Flying squirrels are usually nocturnal. Tree squirrels spend most of their time in trees have bushy tails. Flying squirrels and tree squirrels are found in habitats with trees. Ground squirrels live on the ground. They have furry, but not bushy tails. They nest in underground burrows. Ground squirrels are found in a variety of habitats including forests and grasslands. Woodchucks, chipmunks, prairie dogs, and marmots are all ground squirrels! Tree squirrels and ground squirrels are active in the day. Some species in this family, like prairie dogs, live in colonies, other species are solitary.
