About New Tanglewood Tales: Backstage with Rising Artists:

NEW TANGLEWOOD TALES: BACKSTAGE WITH RISING ARTISTS chronicles the professional and personal lives of six fellows from the 2014 class of the Tanglewood Music Center, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer music academy located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts.

The behind-the-scenes documentary series follows the Tanglewood Music Center fellows as they leave their homes for Tanglewood; meet and interact with their colleagues in the Tanglewood Music Center; participate in orchestral, vocal and chamber music concerts; and prepare music for a Festival of Contemporary Music.

The program also shows them attending and participating in master classes with BSO members, Tanglewood Music Center faculty and visiting artists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Emanuel Ax and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe.

In addition to footage of an interview with Boston Pops Laureate Conductor John Williams, the documentary shows sequences of the fellows at work with some of the world's most prestigious conductors, including BSO music director Andris Nelsons.

Nelsons leads the Tanglewood Music Center orchestra as part of a gala program that also features the Boston Symphony Orchestra performing works by Rachmaninoff and Ravel.

The personal lives of the fellows - Karina Canellakis (conductor); Jeffrey Deroche (percussion); Conor Mcdonald (baritone); Clare Elizabeth Monfredo (cello); Masha Popova (flute); and Jacob Shack (viola) - are juxtaposed with their musical studies as they navigate the world between being a student and a professional musician over the course of the summer.
