DURHAM, May 14, 2002 - Young storytellers from across Northern New England took top honors in NHPTV's annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. For the eighth year NHPTV invited children in kindergarten through third grade to write, illustrate and submit stories as part of this national contest sponsored by Reading Rainbow, the public television series that encourages children to explore the world of books. The stories are judged locally and the winners in each of the four categories (kindergarten through third grade) are submitted to the national contest. This year's national winners will be announced in June. Reading Rainbow airs weekdays at 11:30 a.m. on NHPTV.This year New Hampshire Public Television received a total of 457 entries from area students. Her younger sister Katherine joins her on the list this year as the Second Place winner for the first grade. There were also several Honorable Mentions awarded for each grade level.
