The Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation has awarded nearly $10,000 for New Hampshire Public Television’s Ready To Learn (RTL) services for children and families in the Greater Manchester area. NHPTV’s Ready To Learn effort enhances the value of public television’s high-quality programs for children. Working with PBS, New Hampshire Public Television extends the reach of these programs through local parent and caregiver workshops, free books for children, and publications and Web materials that prepare young children to enter school “ready to learn.”“This generous donation from the Bean Foundation means NHPTV and Ready To Learn (RTL) will reach more children and parents with tools to help them learn,” said Pat VanWagoner, NHPTV’s RTL coordinator. “We are grateful and delighted to extend RTL’s impact in Manchester.”Support from the Bean Foundation will expand the distribution of free books in Manchester. NHPTV currently provides nearly 3,000 new, high-quality books annually to children in and around Manchester through partnerships with Manchester Developmental Preschool, Easter Seals Early Education Child Care, Easter Seals Child Care Resource and Referral, and the Manchester Visiting Nurse Association. The grant also will help NHPTV provide books to children staying at the YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter and Manchester Emergency Housing, Inc.Funding from the Bean Foundation will support special RTL activities in Manchester in the coming year, including:A Family Math Night or Family Science Night at a local elementary school; Two Family Literacy Nights featuring Leona from the PBS children’s series Between the Lions; Workshops for parents, early childhood professionals, teachers, and other caregivers on strategies for promoting literacy, the learning triangle (view, read, do), media literacy, anger management, conflict resolution, diversity and self-esteem, and child health and wellness; and Distribution of educational print materials in both English and Spanish to schools and organizations in Manchester.
