NHPTV Projects Budget Shortfall

DURHAM, February 19, 2003) - Citing an economic downturn that has led to a drop in financial support from individual members and corporate underwriters, New Hampshire Public Television General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Peter A. Frid announced today a projected $650,000 revenue shortfall for this fiscal year. “Like the families and businesses we serve, NHPTV is facing tough economic times,” said Frid. “We are making every effort to bridge the funding gap without affecting the programs and services vital to communities throughout Northern New England.”NHPTV eliminated two staff positions in 2003 as part of its plan to reduce expenses. The not-for-profit organization has instituted a hiring freeze and cut most of its spending for freelance employees. NHPTV also plans to drastically reduce the costs related to its monthly members’ magazine. Additional staff and operational cuts are possible.Projected FY '03 Revenue Sources Like other public broadcasters across the country, NHPTV is experiencing budget pressures resulting from a decline in individual giving and corporate underwriting. Frid noted that a successful March membership campaign is critical to helping close NHPTV’s budget gap. “NHPTV’s membership base is our largest source of financial support,” Frid said. “For 45 years, members have invested in our quality programs and services that reach into schools, homes and businesses across the region. We are counting on our members in these challenging times.”Beyond its award-winning local and national television programs, NHPTV provides instructional services for 220,000 students from kindergarten through high school; airs Ready To Learn programs for children, preschool to age 12; and provides professional development programs and advanced technology training for parents, educators and child-care providers in New Hampshire and neighboring states.
