• 1776 - General George Washington and his troops are defeated by General William Howe at the Battle of Long Island (also known as the  Battle of Brooklyn.).
• 1859 - The first successful U.S. oil well is drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania.
• 1881 - The Georgia Hurricane makes landfall near Savannah, killing an estimated 700 people.
• 1883 - Krakatoa erupts leading to tidal waves that killed 36,000 on the islands of Java and Sumatra.
