• 1776 -  The Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Second Continental Congress.
• 1826 - John Adams and Thomas Jefferson die within hours of each other. on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
• 1827 -  Slavery is abolished in New York.
• 1831 - James Monroe, the 7th U.S. President, dies.
• 1845 - Henry David Thoreau decamps to Walden Pond.
• 1855- Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass" is published.
• 1939 - Lou Gehrig tells the crowd at Yankee Stadium that he considers himself "The luckiest man on the face of the earth" and retires from baseball.
• 1997 - Pathfinder space probe lands on Mars.
