  • 1775 - British general Thomas Gage declares martial law in Massachusetts
  • 1817 -  Karl von Drais rides his invention, the Laufmaschine or dandy horse, an early form of the bicycle.1939 
  • 1939 - The Baseball Hall of Fame opens in Cooperstown, New York.
  • 1963 - NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers is murdered in front of his home in Jackson, Mississippi by Ku Klux Klan member Byron De La Beckwith.
  • 1964 -  Anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life in prison in South Africa.
  • 1967 - The Supreme Court rules in Loving v. Virginia that state laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional.
  • 1987 - In a speech at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, President Ronald Reagan demanded that Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev  ''tear down this wall.'' 
  • 2016 - 49 people are killed in a shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
