  • 1892 - Homer Plessy is arrested after refusing to leave his seat in the "whites-only" car of a train.
  • 1929 - Vatican City becomes a sovereign state.
  • 1942 - The Battle of Midway ends.
  • 1965 -The Supreme Court rules in Griswold v. Connecticut that states can not criminalize the use of contraception by married couples.
  • 2003 - New Hampshire Episcopalians elect an openly gay man, the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, to be bishop.
