"American Experience" And "NOVA" Commemorate Holocause Remembrance Month

(DURHAM, April 2, 2002) - In April, New Hampshire Public Television marks Holocaust Remembrance Month with broadcasts of American Experience and NOVA that focus on reactions to the Holocaust, past and present. On Saturday, April 6 at 9 p.m., New Hampshire Public Television presents American Experience: America and the Holocaust: Deceit and Indifference. Narrated by Hal Linden, the program describes the complex social and political factors that shaped America's response to the Holocaust, from Kristallnacht in 1938 through the liberation of the death camps in 1945. The United States had an opportunity to open its doors to refugees from the Third Reich but instead erected a "paper wall" a bureaucratic maze that prevented all but a few from entering the country until 1944. On Monday, April 15 at 8 p.m., NOVA: Holocaust on Trial covers the three-month libel action by British historian David Irving against American academic Deborah Lipstadt and her publisher. In her book Denying the Holocaust, Lipstadt labeled Irving "one of the most dangerous" of the self-styled revisionist historians of the Holocaust. Irving, a Hitler biographer and researcher on Nazi Germany, wrote controversial books claiming there was no systematic plan to exterminate Jews and that no Jews were killed in the gas chambers at Auschwitz. NOVA follows Irving's notorious suit in British court, dramatizing key exchanges from the trial, and presenting interviews with historians, as well as archival footage.
