NHPTV Announces Local Winners of Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest

DURHAM, May 14, 2002 - Young storytellers from across Northern New England took top honors in NHPTV's annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. For the eighth year NHPTV invited children in kindergarten through third grade to write, illustrate and submit stories as part of this national contest sponsored by Reading Rainbow, the public television series that encourages children to explore the world of books. The stories are judged locally and the winners in each of the four categories (kindergarten through third grade) are submitted to the national contest. This year's national winners will be announced in June. Reading Rainbow airs weekdays at 11:30 a.m. on NHPTV. This year New Hampshire Public Television received a total of 457 entries from area students. The top three winners for each grade level are as follows: Kindergarten First Place: Liam Harvey, Marblehead, MA - "I Love My Dad" Second Place: Katelyn Griswold, Nashua, NH - "My Book to Find Lost Treasures" Third Place: Taylor Moll, Campton, NH - "Clara's Dream" First Grade First Place: Daniela Gamba, Nashua, NH - "The Two Friends" Second Place: Katherine Zavez, Winchester, MA - "Busy, Buzzy Honey Bees" Third Place: Ethan White, Leyden, MA - "Wildlife" Second Grade First Place: Christopher Rigoli, Andover, MA - "Children are Children Wherever They Live" Second Place: Liam Thomas O'Connor, Londonderry, NH - "Remembering" Third Place: Charlotte Rutty, Cape Elizabeth, ME - "Going to School" Third Grade First Place: Alexis Zavez, Winchester, MA - "What is Blue?" Second Place: Monica Vendituoli, Nashua, NH - "Dalmatian Cat" Third Place: Amy Cass, Laconia, NH - "Sent from Heaven" Alexis Zavez of Winchester, MA was last year's second grade Grand National First Place winner. Her younger sister Katherine joins her on the list this year as the Second Place winner for the first grade. There were also several Honorable Mentions awarded for each grade level.
